AnyPS5 questions, answered
The things people ask most about AnyPS5, with the answer first and the source linked.
Is AnyPS5 an emulator?
No. An emulator such as shadPS4 is a program that pretends to be the console while the game runs inside it. AnyPS5 instead rewrites the game's PS5 executable once, ahead of time, into a normal Windows .exe or Linux program, and replaces the console's system libraries with its own versions. There is no console being imitated while you play and no separate runtime process.
This works because the PS5's processor is an x86-64 AMD chip like a PC's, so the game's code runs directly. What AnyPS5 has to rebuild is everything around it: the system functions (memory, files, sound, fonts, saves, network) and the graphics, whose shaders it translates to Vulkan.
Is it ready? Can I play PS5 games on PC with it?
A handful, with effort. As of 11 October 2026 the project's official compatibility list has one verified game, Dreaming Sarah. Community testers also report Balatro, Animal Well and the DOOM homebrew port as playable. Big games like GTA V, Astro Bot and Demon's Souls reach gameplay only on testing branches, slowly and with crashes. The games list has every report.
Will AnyPS5 run GTA 6?
Not at launch, realistically. Grand Theft Auto VI comes out on 19 November 2026 for consoles. AnyPS5 does not need special support for each game: any PS5 game runs once every system function and graphics feature it uses works. But a huge open-world game uses a lot of them, and the closest example today, the PS5 version of GTA V, only plays its opening prologue at around 27 fps on a testing branch.
You would also need your own dump of the game from your own PS5. If GTA VI later gets an official PC release, that will be the easy way.
Can AnyPS5 run PS4 games?
Not retail ones. A contributor tried in October 2026: a simple PS4 homebrew that draws on the CPU did run after two relinker fixes, which is a first, but real PS4 games draw through the PS4's graphics driver library (libSceGnmDriver), which AnyPS5 does not have. Of Bloodborne's 468 system imports, 308 already exist in AnyPS5, so the gap is mostly graphics. Details in the project discussion.
For PS4 games today, the established route is the PS4 emulator shadPS4.
Where do I download it, and is it safe?
Only from github.com/boykopovar/AnyPS5/releases. The code is open source and the release files are built from it. Look-alike repositories and sites offering "AnyPS5 downloads", installers or versions the project never released have appeared; skip them. Anything bundled with games, firmware or keys is not AnyPS5. The setup guide lists what each official file is.
Is it free?
Yes. AnyPS5 is free and open source under the GNU GPL version 2. There is no paid version, no account and no launcher to buy.
Is it legal?
The project describes itself as an interoperability, research and preservation tool. It contains no Sony code, firmware, keys or games, and it is meant to be used with games you own and dumped yourself. Downloading games you do not own is not covered by any of that. Laws on dumping and circumvention differ by country; this site is not legal advice.
Do I need a PS5?
Yes, in practice. AnyPS5 needs a decrypted dump of the game, which means dumping it from a console you own. It does not ship games and cannot read an encrypted disc or store download.
How is it different from shadPS4, KytyPS5 or SharpEmu?
shadPS4 is a mature PS4 emulator with hundreds of playable games; it does not run PS5 games. KytyPS5 and SharpEmu are PS5 emulators: they run the game inside an emulated console. A custom KytyPS5 build showed GTA V's prologue at 40 to 60 fps in September 2026, crashing within minutes (report). AnyPS5 takes the other route described above. The approaches share the same hard problem, rebuilding the PS5's system software and graphics, and the AnyPS5 contributors openly reuse pieces from shadPS4 where licences allow.
What do the 86% and 100% figures mean?
The first is the share of PS5 system functions the project knows about that are implemented; the second is the share of GPU shader instructions it translates. Neither is a share of games that work. The progress page explains both and lets you search every function.
Does it work on Mac, Steam Deck or Android?
Mac: not officially supported; one tester has run Balatro on an M1 Pro with their own fix, so it is possible but not a setup to copy. Steam Deck: in principle, with the Linux build, but no test has been reported. Android, iPad and other ARM devices: only as outside research experiments that add an x86 translation layer. See requirements.
Who makes AnyPS5, and where is the community?
It was started by GitHub user boykopovar on 3 August 2026 and is now built by hundreds of contributors; the repository passed 26,000 stars in October 2026. Talk happens in the project's GitHub Discussions and on its Discord, linked from the repository.
I tested a game. Where do I report it?
In the project's Game bring-up discussions: one thread per game, with the title ID (PPSA…), your OS, CPU and GPU, how far it got, and a screenshot. This site picks up new reports from there.
