Where it stands

Rise of the Ronin starts on Linux and does real work before stopping, but it has not shown a single frame. The only report comes from one contributor on CachyOS Linux with an RX 9070 XT, using a dump from his own console.

Two days of work cleared several walls. The game's thread library (libSceUlt) was added on 2026-10-09, which was the first thing stopping it from loading. Shaders that the game registers but cannot yet be translated are now postponed instead of ending the run, and a shader-loading speed-up was merged on 2026-10-10. These steps used to take five open pull requests and 4 min 40 s to reach the same audio stop.

Plain main still does not load the game, because 8 imports are not provided (JSON helper functions, two audio report functions, one network function and one profiling function). With throwing placeholders for those 8 the game runs for about 30 seconds and stops at an audio check: the game's sound system (KTSL2, Koei Tecmo's sound library) asks for an option flag value of 2, and the project's code refuses any non-zero flag. Nobody knows yet what that bit means.

None of the 8 missing functions had been called by the time of that stop, so they may not be the real next blocker. Everything after the audio check is unknown.

What is stopping it

  • The game's sound system asks for an option flag value of 2 (bit 1), which the project's NGS2 code refuses; what that bit means is unknown. Thread
  • Eight functions the game imports are still missing on main: five JSON helpers (libSceJson2), two NGS2 report-handler functions, sceNetShowNetstat and sceRazorCpuPushMarker. Thread

How it got here

  1. A fix is proposed so that shaders that cannot be prepared when registered are postponed until first use, instead of ending the run. Several titles, including Rise of the Ronin, stopped on this. It is merged on 2026-10-10. Source
  2. A first status thread says the game is not in game and no frame is shown; plain main does not load because 13 imports are missing. With a few extra pull requests it ran about 4 min 40 s before an audio stop. Source
  3. The five missing libSceUlt thread-library functions the game needs are added and merged; before that the relinked game did not start at all. Source
  4. A shader-loading speed-up (removing a redundant structurize pass at registration) is merged. Source
  5. Update: after the recent merges, the missing imports shrink from 13 to 8 and, with placeholders for them, the game reaches the audio-flag stop after about 30 seconds, down from 4 min 40 s and five extra pull requests. Source
